About the Covenant

The text of the Covenant of Mayors has been translated from English into all community languages and into other languages. Although the Covenant of Mayors Office has mandated professional translations of the sector, it is not entirely excluded that the translated texts may contain inaccuracies. In case of doubts about the meaning of the texts, it is therefore requested that all the cities adhering to the Pact and the support structures refer to the original version in English.

The European Union (EU) is leading the global fight against climate change, and has made it a top priority. Its ambitious targets are spelt out in the EU Climate Action and Energy Package, which commits Member States to curb their CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020. Signatories of the Covenant of Mayors contribute to these policy objectives through a formal commitment to go beyond this target through the implementation of their Sustainable Energy Action Plan.

The Covenant becomes global

Since 2017, regional Pact offices have been establishes in North America, Latin America and Caribbean, China and Southeast Asia, India and Japan to complement existing ones.
